Winner of the 2014 Bright Future Award at the Independent Spirit Awards, If You Build It spends a year in the life of one of America’s most innovative high school classrooms. Filmed entirely in Bertie County, NC, the story revolves around two teachers, ten students, and a unique yearlong curriculum that one of the instructors calls “shop class for the 21st century.” Featured prominently in the film are designer-instructors Emily Pilloton and Matt Miller. A 2012 participant of Good Pitch, If You Build It received major grant support from The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The Kendeda Fund, the Wyncote Foundation, and The Sundance Institute, The Fledgling Fund, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.
